a few things

Hi guys-

Next Monday, from 1p-4p, Nicole will teach an advanced editing class. Please plan your shooting schedules accordingly.

Also, please read the following articles from yesterday's NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/15/business/media/15candidate.html

Also, take note in today's story about the capture of the top Taliban commander, it's reported that the NYT had the information regarding the capture on Thursday, but held off on the reporting at the request of the White House. All interesting reading.

Friday afternoon

Hey, I know everybody is working very hard this week and I ask you to indulge one more thing...on Friday, at 2p at 30 Rock, we will have a makeup artist to give you basic instruction and make some of you up. iIwant the gents to attend as well as the ladies...even Brian and Lester wear makeup to make them look better under studio lights (and poor lighting).

trick when shooting

In order to make certain we are dealing with video at the right perspective (stretched, anamorphic, etc), please do the following when you start shooting...and I know this sounds strange.

Acquire a roll of tape (preferably a roll whose inside diameter is 3 or 4 inches). Hold it next to your face and record about 5 seconds...SO THE CAMERA SEES THE FULL CIRCLE FACING THE CAMERA). We know the inside of the tape is a full circle, so when we see the video on playback, we will know for certain whether we are in the proper perspective (using the circle as our guide).

Bob will show you an example on Monday.

I hope today was helpful, I think it went very well!

Have a great weekend.

help from YOU

Hi-

Can you guys think about old projects...where you had bad lighting or shaky shots because you didn't use a tripod? And, on the other side, probably in later projects...pans that are nice and smooth because you DID use a tripod and interviews or any other shots with nice lighting. Let me know if you have examples and then I will ask for a volunteer to put a few examples onto one DVD. I need about three examples of each.
Thanks very much.

schedule and other things

Good afternoon everybody...a couple of things. Please read the following article from yesterday's New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/us/10detain.html Please note the documents from which the information was received were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

GOOD NEWS! There will be no class on Monday, January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Tuesday, please report to Kubrick at 10am for the first day with Bob Roy. I will be there, also. We'll spell out the schedule at that time.

I would rather tell you the following updates in person, but since I won't see you all together until Friday...here goes. Adaeze will not be returning to class as she is unable to travel by plane due to her pregnancy. Lyan will also not be returning for the second semester. We will, however, have two new students joining us. Venus, from Malaysia and Mariana from Brazil. They will be tutored this week, will join us next week and will go off to two more weeks of extensive training. I'm sure you'll be your usual helpful selves as they join us lacking as much exposure as you have all had. I thank you in advance.

See you Wednesday for script approval.

the "final" project

You have plenty of time for this project so make it as good as you can! You have the rest of this week to finish setting up and shooting your piece. I suggest you finish shooting by the end of the weekend so you have Monday to screen and Tuesday to write. SCRIPTS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY, JAN 13 between noon and 3pm. Book tracking for Wednesday afternoon....you have all day Thursday to edit and we will screen your project at NOON next Friday, Jan 15.

If your story changes, you must notify me. I have approved stories based on your pitches and you have to get into the habit of letting your supervisors know as things change.

The project should be 2:30-3:00 WITH a stand-up (UNLESS it is an In Your Own Words).

Anybody who has outstanding assignments, MUST finish and present those pieces by and on Friday, Jan 15. The new semester beings Monday, January 18. I will post a schedule for that first week on the blog by the end of this Thursday.
